Practical guide · Recurring payments

Plan the whole subscription lifecycle.

Recurring payments connect a customer relationship to repeated billing attempts. SecurePayAPI supports subscription plans and lifecycle operations through a supported recurring-payment setup. Each attempt still has its own outcome.

Define the customer agreement first

Write down what the customer receives, the billing amount and currency, the intended cadence, and how they can request a change. Confirm the supported operations and their timing in the documentation before promising a particular customer experience.

  • Confirm account eligibility and the recurring-payment configuration.
  • Make the billing schedule and cancellation information clear to the customer.
  • Decide what happens to service when a payment is unsuccessful or requires customer action.
  • Assign responsibility for billing questions, pauses, and cancellations.

An illustrative workflow

A membership business creates a plan, connects the customer through its supported billing flow, and follows each renewal result. A customer later requests a pause; the business checks the supported operation and timing, records the change, and explains the effect on the next billing attempt. This is a planning example, not a customer case study.

  1. Set up the plan. Match the supported plan configuration to the customer agreement.
  2. Test enrollment and renewal. Use sandbox scenarios to check successful payments, declines, and required customer action.
  3. Follow each attempt. Use returned statuses and supported notifications to update your service and billing records.
  4. Test changes. Exercise pause and cancellation workflows and confirm their effect before exposing those controls to customers.

Keep billing and service records aligned

Do not assume a renewal succeeded because the previous one did. Your application should distinguish a completed payment from an unsuccessful attempt or a result requiring customer action. Use supported notifications and merchant records to investigate exceptions.

Decide what your team communicates when a payment fails, who reviews unresolved billing issues, and when a customer should contact support. Confirm available recovery behavior rather than assuming retries, reminders, or automatic service changes are included.

Recurring-payment acceptance and payout availability are separate. Read the payout timing guide before using expected renewals in a cash-flow plan.

Common questions

Are recurring payments guaranteed?

No. Each billing attempt can succeed, be declined, or require customer action. Handle the returned result and supported notifications for each attempt.

Can customers pause or cancel?

Supported subscription APIs include pause and cancellation lifecycle operations. Confirm their availability and timing for your integration, then build and test the customer-facing workflow you intend to offer.

Should I assume automatic retries are included?

No. Confirm the supported recovery behavior in the documentation and with the team. Plan your own operational response to unsuccessful billing and unresolved customer action.
